Keeping libraries safe for children

Eagerly awaited revised edition of 'A Safe Place for Children' now available via the CILIP website.

Libraries for children and young people are dynamic and exciting, but they must be a place where young people feel secure and confident to enjoy the resources around them, where they know that they will receive suitable help - above all libraries must be a safe place for children.

So says 'A Safe Place for Children' - guidelines produced by CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals to support library staff in creating this secure environment. Written specifically for staff who need a clearer understanding of their duty of care for young people using libraries, 'A Safe Place for Children' is also valuable to young people's services managers in public libraries who are looking for a framework in which to develop guidelines to support child safety in their libraries.

A revised edition of the guidelines was essential in light of recent high-profile child safety cases and changes in legislation. The content reflects this, with sections on: the legal background; dealing with unsupervised children; adults in areas designated for the use of children; criminal records checks; and using photographs of children.

'A Safe Place for Children' is available via the CILIP website at http://www.cilip.org.uk/professionalguidance/youngpeople/safeplaceforchildren.htm.
