An independent comparative product review of Dialog NewsRoom,
LexisNexis and Dow Jones Factiva (The Big Three) is being published in
November's issue of VIP Magazine (http://www.vivaVIP.com/). In
addition to updating the research from last year (see
http://www.freepint.com/press/bigthree.htm), this year's comparison
features the results of a user survey on uses of the Big Three,
satisfaction and factors involved in purchase decisions.

Highlights from the survey
==========================
Over 160 users
responded to the survey, representing organisations the United
Kingdom, European Union, North America, Australia and other parts of
the world. Sectors represented include finance, consulting, legal,
education and government.

Most respondents subscribe to more than one product; 73% subscribe to
Nexis from LexisNexis, 67% to Dow Jones Factiva and 34% to Dialog
NewsRoom. Respondents turn most frequently to Factiva Dow Jones
(average of 3.25 on a 4-point scale among those who use the product),
followed by Nexis (2.96), and then Dialog NewsRoom (1.94).

Respondents are highly experienced users. A third have more than 8
years' experience with the products and another third have between 3
and 8 years' experience.

Highest satisfaction with features and functions of products include:

Value from Product: highest average ratings for all three vendors
Effective Search: also high average ratings for all three vendors

Dow Jones Factiva and Nexis from LexisNexis received high marks for
scope of content. Dialog NewsRoom outpaced the other two products for
the usefulness of its training.

Lowest satisfaction was recorded for:

Communication: All three vendors scored on the lower end for useful
communication with users Training: Respondents gave vendors lower
marks for training that meets user needs

A full report of all survey results, including graphs and open-ended
responses, is available to all VIP subscribers. An article describing
the results and providing many of the graphs is included in the
November issue of VIP. Non-subscribers can purchase the issue for GBP
54, and the issue bundled with the report for GBP 74 (single site
usage). The report alone is GBP 39 for single site use and includes
purchaser's choice of sector coverage (consulting, financial services,
legal or government). Multisite and enterprise options are also
available.

Highlights from comparative product review
==========================================
This year's comparative
review was researched and written by a team of two -- Pam Foster,
editor emeritus of VIP Magazine, and Jill Fenton, a well-known
business research consultant and past VIP reviewer.

The team conducted in-depth trials of all three products, comparing
their results to the vendors' marketing materials and claims, noting
new features and functions, and investigating changes in available
content from last year's review.

Among the macro trends identified this year:

+ Increase in web-base sources, particularly blogs

+ Contraction in some other high value sources -- FT and Harvard
Business Review, among others, have made their content more
difficult to obtain through aggregators so that they can have a
closer connection to their customers

+ Emphasis on specialisms, such as local resources or content from
far-flung geographies

+ Continuing efforts to incorporate easy-to-use features without
undermining the power of detailed searching.

VIP conducts in-depth independent reviews of business information
products. To help customers choose among the major vendors, November's
issue takes on all of The Big Three and compares them side-by-side in
a detailed review.

The issue is available to purchase online as a one-off copy priced GBP
54 or by annual subscription starting at GBP 285 for a single location
at: http://web.vivavip.com/go/vip/60
